Israel Faces Surge of Instagram Account Blocks Following WhatsApp Attacks

Following a recent wave of WhatsApp account blocks, Israeli users have reported a similar surge in Instagram account suspensions. Since yesterday, many Israelis have found their Instagram accounts blocked without clear reasons, sparking concern and frustration among users. One user shared in a large women's Facebook group that her account was blocked overnight with no explanation, a sentiment echoed by others who reported losing access to long-standing accounts with thousands of followers.

Cybersecurity expert Ofer Revach noted that he has received dozens of reports about this growing phenomenon, describing it as a likely deliberate attack targeting Israeli Instagram accounts. According to Revach, a large group, possibly based in Turkey, is mass-reporting Israeli accounts to trigger automatic suspensions. These attackers then contact victims via WhatsApp to demand ransom payments in exchange for account restoration.

Revach explained that the attackers exploit publicly visible contact buttons or phone numbers on Instagram profiles, using bots to flood reports and cause account removals. The blocks often cite "account integrity and authentic identity" violations, implying suspected impersonation. The attack appears to combine intentional mass reporting with a possible Meta platform bug, as blocking one account can lead to the suspension of other accounts linked to the same device over the past three months.

The expert also revealed a shadowy industry on Telegram that profits millions annually by helping users regain access, sometimes with the assistance of low-level Meta support employees who have the authority to reopen accounts. While no high-profile Israeli accounts have been affected yet, similar tactics have previously targeted celebrities.

Meta currently offers no direct customer service for these issues, leaving users to appeal suspensions through automated processes. If appeals fail, options are limited to legal action or purchasing Meta Verified status in hopes of reaching a human representative. Meta has confirmed it is investigating the matter.
