Ben Gurion Airport Faces Staffing Concerns Ahead of August Travel Peak

As August approaches, Ben Gurion Airport is preparing for the busiest travel period of the year, with thousands of Israeli families expected to depart for summer vacations abroad. However, a dispute has emerged regarding the airport's readiness to handle the surge in passenger volume. Pinchas Idan, chairman of the Airport Authority workers' union, warned of a significant staff shortage, estimating a need for approximately 400 additional employees. He cautioned that recruitment difficulties could lead to long queues and operational delays during this peak period.

Idan acknowledged ongoing recruitment efforts by airport management but emphasized that many positions remain unfilled, raising concerns about the airport's capacity to manage the expected tens of thousands of daily passengers. These operations include security screening, ground services, and overall airport logistics.

In response, the Israel Airports Authority firmly rejected claims of a staffing crisis, stating that Ben Gurion Airport is fully prepared and operating normally. The authority highlighted that daily passenger numbers are expected to reach between 90,000 and 100,000, and workforce management is conducted routinely to meet operational demands. They also stressed that recruitment continues steadily and that management and the workers' union are cooperating during this challenging period.

Despite the disagreement, the summer season is anticipated to be one of the busiest in the airport's history. The Israel Airports Authority assured the public that it is committed to maintaining operational continuity and passenger service quality throughout the peak travel season.
