Head of Israel Airports Authority Workers Warns of Severe Summer Staffing Shortages at Ben Gurion Airport

Pnehas Idan, chairman of the workers' committee at the Israel Airports Authority, has issued a warning about a significant shortage of staff at Ben Gurion Airport ahead of the peak summer travel season. Idan stated on July 28, 2026, that the airport is short by approximately 400 employees and that recruitment efforts have been unsuccessful. He cautioned that this shortage could lead to severe queues and operational challenges throughout August, saying, "I do not know how we will get through August."

The Israel Airports Authority management denied Idan's claims regarding the staffing shortage. His warning comes after Ben Gurion Airport experienced major disruptions over the past two days due to external technical failures. These included delays caused by a malfunction in the European air traffic management system and a radar failure in Greek airspace, which affected nearly all flights crossing Greece to and from Israel.

The recent external disruptions have already caused significant delays for incoming and outgoing flights. Idan's statement highlights an additional internal issue that could exacerbate operational difficulties during the busiest travel period of the year. Passengers and stakeholders are advised to prepare for potential delays and longer wait times at the airport in the coming weeks.
