Two Israeli universities, Technion and Tel Aviv University, have been ranked among the top 30 worldwide in the inaugural W5 index measuring academic AI output. Technion placed 25th and Tel Aviv University 28th in the ranking, which evaluates universities based on their influence on the AI industry, including alumni working in leading companies, startup creation, research quality, computing infrastructure, curriculum depth, and AI media mentions.

The report highlights strong ties between these institutions and major Israeli tech hubs, including Nvidia's research center in Yokneam, Intel's operations in Kiryat Gat and Haifa, and the talent pool from Israel's elite military intelligence unit 8200. Notably, Technion's AI startup founders rival those from Stanford in terms of output.

The W5 index, compiled by an American PR firm's research unit, ranked 50 leading universities globally, with 25 from the US, 4 from the UK, 3 from China, and 2 from Israel. Stanford, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon lead the overall ranking. Technion outperformed prestigious universities like Harvard in two key subcategories: faculty and alumni employed in AI industries and alumni entrepreneurship.

The Weizmann Institute was not included this year due to its lack of undergraduate programs, complicating comparisons, but it is expected to join the ranking next year. Israel ranks eighth globally in the number of AI startup founders among graduates, underscoring the country's growing influence in AI innovation.
