Israelis Increasingly Choose eSIM Over Traditional Roaming for Overseas Internet Access
Israeli travelers face a common dilemma before flying abroad: whether to purchase a traditional roaming data package from their Israeli cellular provider, switch to an eSIM, or buy a local SIM card. In recent years, eSIMs have gained popularity due to lower prices and the ability to activate data plans within minutes, often before landing. However, the best choice depends on the traveler's needs and trip type.
Traditional roaming packages offer convenience, requiring no technical setup and maintaining the Israeli phone number for calls and messages. This option suits those needing full availability but often comes with higher costs and limited data volumes. Conversely, eSIMs are digital SIM cards installed via apps or QR codes, allowing users to select plans by country or region. They are generally cheaper and quicker to activate but may lack voice call capabilities and are not supported by all devices.
A typical price comparison for a week-long trip to Europe shows eSIMs tend to be more cost-effective. According to a recent Kantar study commissioned by Israeli eSIM company Voye Global, 38.4% of Israelis traveling abroad in the past five years purchased an eSIM, surpassing the 34% who opted for traditional roaming packages. Additionally, 24.9% bought local SIM cards, and 20.8% relied solely on Wi-Fi.
The study also revealed age-related preferences: younger travelers (18-49) favor eSIMs, while older groups (50 and above) prefer traditional roaming. Among those aged 66-74, 42.2% chose roaming packages compared to only 15.6% selecting eSIMs. Women are more likely than men to use eSIMs (57.4% vs. 42.6%), and most eSIM users hold higher education degrees. Lifestyle factors also influence choices, with secular Israelis comprising half of eSIM purchasers.
Voye Global commented that the international communication package market is at a turning point. While traditional roaming was once the default, growing awareness and the advantages of eSIM technology are driving a significant shift toward digital solutions, expected to accelerate in the coming years.
