Sheba Medical Center Partners with OpenAI to Deploy Advanced AI Healthcare Models in Israel

Sheba Medical Center, through its innovation arm ARC, has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with OpenAI to provide Israeli medical teams access to OpenAI's specialized healthcare AI models. Sheba becomes the first hospital outside the United States to utilize OpenAI's dedicated medical AI suite, including ChatGPT Health, launched in January and currently limited to select US hospitals. The agreement was finalized with OpenAI's top healthcare executive, Nate Gross.

In August, a Sheba delegation will visit OpenAI headquarters for high-level meetings. The partnership grants early access to advanced AI models designed to assist physicians in clinical decision-making and personalized treatment planning based on comprehensive medical research. The system is encrypted and tailored specifically for hospital environments.

Sheba's medical teams will engage in development stages, participate in global OpenAI events, and create internal applications integrating the AI tools. Sheba's clinical protocols will be incorporated into OpenAI's models, enabling future recommendations customized to Israel's unique healthcare context. Clinicians and researchers can input patient case descriptions and receive references to relevant studies and articles, with all responses including citations for verification.

The AI tools will be embedded into daily clinical and administrative workflows, reducing documentation burdens and enhancing organizational efficiency. Sheba can also integrate its institutional knowledge, such as clinical protocols and policy documents, ensuring AI outputs align with hospital standards.

This initiative complements existing AI systems at Sheba developed by ARC, including AIDOC's imaging analysis for cardiac events and SmartER's automated clinical documentation in emergency care. ARC was established in 2019 by Sheba's CEO Prof. Yitzhak Kreiss and Innovation VP Eyal Tsimlichman to advance digital medical innovation, facilitate strategic international collaborations, and support startups through an investment arm partnered with TriVentures.
