Hapoel Jerusalem Denied EuroLeague Wild Card, Will Stay in EuroCup
Hapoel Jerusalem announced on Friday that it will not receive a wild card to the EuroLeague next season. The club said the decision is final, meaning it will play in the EuroCup again and try to reach Europe’s top competition by winning that tournament.
According to Jerusalem, EuroLeague management told the club that, because of the complex security situation in Israel, it could not grant the invitation, even though Jerusalem says its offer was the highest. The club added that the goal remains unchanged, to win the EuroCup and earn a place in the EuroLeague.
In its statement, Jerusalem said club officials are already working on building the strongest possible roster to achieve that target. It also said that its multi-year agreement with the EuroCup does not mean it will remain in the competition for the entire term, but was intended to show its commitment to joining the EuroLeague.
The club said it is still working through all channels with EuroLeague officials to secure future permanent membership in the competition. It vowed to keep investing the necessary resources to make that happen as soon as possible.
