IDF Lawmaker Criticizes Election Committee Appointments, Chairman Defends Integrity

During a Knesset Intelligence Subcommittee session on election preparations, Likud MK Boaz Bismuth sharply criticized recent appointments within the Central Elections Committee, calling them questionable and demanding explanations. Bismuth highlighted concerns over internal oversight and alleged political bias in key roles, referencing the resignation of internal auditor Hila Waldman in April amid professional disagreements and the controversial appointments of legal advisor Yifat Siminovsky and acting CEO Din Livna, both of whom faced accusations of political partiality from right-wing factions.

Supreme Court Deputy President and committee chairman Noam Sohlberg responded by expressing surprise at the criticism, emphasizing that all appointees are highly professional and that the committee operates excellently. He stressed the committee's commitment to safeguarding free and fair elections, protecting voter choice from external and internal threats, including cyber interference and misinformation.

Bismuth warned that the upcoming elections are a prime target for enemies like Iran, aiming to sow internal discord and even physical harm to public officials, including the prime minister. He stressed the importance of maintaining public trust in election integrity and preventing any manipulation, whether by foreign actors or biased officials.

Shin Bet chief David Zini also participated, reaffirming the agency's independence from Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding election security and underscoring their dedication to ensuring a lawful and democratic election day. Zini urged all parties to avoid politicizing security efforts, emphasizing their full accountability to Judge Sohlberg and the election committee.

The session underscored tensions within Israel's election oversight bodies amid heightened security concerns and political scrutiny, with committee leaders affirming their commitment to impartiality and professional conduct as the country approaches a critical electoral moment.
