Shin Bet Chief Urges Knesset to Avoid Political Entanglement Ahead of Elections

The Knesset Subcommittee on Intelligence held a confidential meeting on July 27 to discuss preparations for the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. Chairman Boaz Bismuth warned that the election campaign would be a primary target for Israel's enemies, highlighting concerns over potential physical threats to public officials, including the Prime Minister and ministers. Bismuth emphasized the need for heightened vigilance by security agencies against both external and internal threats, criticizing recent appointments to the Central Elections Committee as questionable and demanding explanations.

Central Elections Committee Chair Judge Noam Solberg stressed the importance of protecting the democratic process from impersonation, deception, and manipulation aimed at undermining voters' free will. He defended the professionalism of recent committee appointments and underscored the committee's commitment to ensuring free and fair elections through technological, legal, and cooperative security measures.

Shin Bet Chief David Zini clarified the agency's role, emphasizing a strict separation from political involvement and affirming their full subordination to the Central Elections Committee under Judge Solberg's leadership. Zini assured that extensive preparations have been underway for over a year to secure the election day and called on lawmakers to refrain from dragging the Shin Bet into political disputes.

The meeting reflected deep concerns about foreign interference, particularly from Iran, which Bismuth said seeks to destabilize Israel internally by exacerbating societal divisions and threatening elected officials. The subcommittee highlighted the critical national task of safeguarding election integrity and public trust, with all relevant bodies cooperating to ensure a secure and legitimate electoral process.
