Brooklyn Package Thief With Leg Cast Caught by Community Volunteers and Police

In the Chabad neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, residents recently identified a unique package thief who was stealing deliveries while wearing a leg cast. The suspect was seen moving between porches and yards, taking packages left by delivery services. His distinctive cast made him easily recognizable, raising suspicion among passersby.

The breakthrough occurred last Thursday afternoon when a vigilant resident spotted the man rummaging through yards and taking packages. The resident immediately contacted the local volunteer group Shomrim, which provides community security. Shomrim volunteers quickly tracked the suspect from a distance while updating the New York Police Department's 71st precinct about his location.

Police arrived at the scene around 6:40 p.m. and found the suspect still holding stolen packages. Officers promptly detained and handcuffed him. Photos from the scene showed the man wearing a purple hoodie and baseball cap, surrounded by officers and Shomrim volunteers who documented the return of the stolen goods to their owners.

Shomrim emphasized the importance of community vigilance and encouraged residents to report suspicious activity immediately, as this cooperation enables swift police response and helps prevent further thefts. This arrest follows a series of similar incidents in Crown Heights, including a recent capture of another thief at the kosher supermarket Kosher Town, also thanks to Shomrim's alertness.
