Israeli Basketball Association Denies Claims It Sought Citizenship for Dan Otero

Tensions have escalated between Hapoel Tel Aviv and the Israeli Basketball Association following accusations by Hapoel owner Ofer Yanai. Yanai claimed that the association's leaders requested to grant Israeli citizenship to player Dan Otero. However, the association issued a strong denial, stating that Yanai or his representatives were never approached about Otero's citizenship. Instead, it was Hapoel Tel Aviv representatives who initiated contact, requesting a meeting and raising the citizenship issue themselves.

The association clarified that the committee formed is focused solely on establishing the process for selecting naturalized players, not on deciding specific players. The chairman emphasized that Otero is a highly regarded player, but the selection process involves a three-member panel and does not include the chairman. They also noted that any chosen naturalized player would face a lengthy approval process, making immediate participation in upcoming games impossible.

Furthermore, the association stated that the selection of a naturalized player for summer 2026 is not currently under consideration. The national team already has two naturalized players, Kadin Carrington and Danny Wolf, with only one eligible to register for games. The next naturalized player selection will be discussed closer to a major summer tournament. The association dismissed claims of sabotage, explaining that no player has yet been chosen, so no selection could be undermined.

Representatives from Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bnei Herzliya have also been invited to advise the committee before conclusions are finalized. The association accused Yanai of repeatedly attacking it with falsehoods and affirmed its commitment to transparency and advancing Israeli basketball without conspiracy theories.
