Hapoel Tel Aviv Owner Accuses Basketball Federation and Rivals of Blocking Player Naturalization

Ofer Yannay, owner of Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball team, has publicly accused the Israeli Basketball Federation, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Bnei Herzliya of sabotaging the naturalization process of center Dan Oturu to the Israeli national team. Yannay claimed that despite paying $2 million to remove Oturu's contract exit clause as requested by the federation, the naturalization was deliberately delayed due to pressure from rival teams. He alleged that Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bnei Herzliya pushed to change the rules to prevent Oturu from joining the national team as a naturalized player for Hapoel Tel Aviv, arguing that historically naturalized players benefited Maccabi Tel Aviv or Hapoel Jerusalem, but not Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Yannay also criticized the federation's integrity, suggesting that if it were impartial, Oturu would be the starting center for the national team, but instead, a player like Beni Sarur is favored due to vested interests. In response, the Israeli Basketball Federation issued a strong denial, calling Yannay's claims "baseless conspiracy theories" and clarifying that federation chairman Amos Frishman never contacted Yannay or his representatives about Oturu's naturalization. The federation stated that representatives from Hapoel Tel Aviv initiated contact regarding the naturalization request, which was ultimately not considered because the team already has two naturalized players, Kadin Carrington and Danny Wolf.

The federation emphasized that the committee involved only handles procedural matters and does not select specific players. They rejected the sabotage allegations, noting that no decision on Oturu's naturalization has been made, so it could not have been obstructed. The federation accused Yannay of repeatedly attacking the organization with falsehoods.
