Basketball Association Denies Israeli Status to Three Foreign Players

The Israeli Basketball Association's exceptions committee has ruled that American players Will Rayman, D Justin Hynes, and Brandon Bowman will not be granted Israeli player status for the upcoming season. Consequently, they will occupy slots designated for naturalized players. This means each of these players will prevent another naturalized player from participating in a given game, as league regulations permit only one naturalized player per team per game.

For example, Maccabi Tel Aviv currently has naturalized player Shane Hunter on its roster. This ruling implies that only Hunter or Rayman can be registered for any given game, forcing the team to choose between them.

The criteria for obtaining 'old naturalized player' or 'local player' status include being born in Israel, playing in an Israeli youth system for two full seasons, participating in Israeli national team campaigns or at least five official games, or playing three consecutive full seasons in the Israeli league.

Rayman joined Hapoel Haifa in the summer of 2021 and later moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv. However, he was loaned to France during his first season with Maccabi, interrupting his consecutive years in top leagues and resetting his count. Therefore, he does not qualify for the 'old naturalized player' status and its associated rights. His status may be upgraded after completing the upcoming season.
