Basketball Association Denies Israeli Status to Three Foreign Players

The Israeli Basketball Association's exceptions committee has ruled that American players Will Rayman, Dastyn Hennes, and Brandon Bowman will not be granted Israeli "local player" status for the upcoming season. Instead, they will occupy one of the limited "naturalized player" slots.

This decision means that each of these players will count as the sole naturalized player allowed per game, as per league regulations. For example, Maccabi Tel Aviv currently has another naturalized player, Shane Hunter. Therefore, only one of Hunter or Rayman can be registered for any given game, forcing the team to choose between them.

The criteria for "old naturalized player/local player" status include being born in Israel, playing two full seasons in Israeli youth leagues, participating in Israeli national team campaigns or at least five official games, or playing three consecutive full seasons in the Israeli league.

Rayman arrived in Israel in the summer of 2021, playing for Hapoel Haifa for two years before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv. However, he was loaned to France during his first season with Maccabi, preventing him from completing three consecutive years in a top league and resetting his count. Consequently, he does not meet the criteria for "old naturalized player/local player" status and its associated rights. His status may be re-evaluated after completing the current season.
