Israeli Meteorological Service Issues Red Warning for Dangerous High Waves on Mediterranean Coast

The Israeli Meteorological Service has issued a red warning for extremely high and dangerous waves along the Mediterranean coast on Saturday, marking the highest wave heights recorded this summer. The warning is valid until noon and forecasts wave heights between 1.7 and 2.4 meters, with increasing intensity. Authorities caution that these conditions pose significant life-threatening risks to swimmers and sea users due to strong currents, whirlpools, and shifting breaking waves that can pull bathers into deeper waters. There is also a heightened risk of injury from submerged rocks and stones.

The warning extends to small watercraft such as boats, kayaks, and rowing vessels, which face dangers of capsizing, drifting, anchor detachment, and cargo loss near the shore. Additionally, strong winds may cause flying debris hazards. The Meteorological Service urges the public to follow weather updates, obey lifeguard instructions, swim only at designated beaches, avoid deep or unfamiliar waters, and stay clear of breakwaters and piers. Boat owners are advised to secure their vessels or consult authorities before venturing into open waters.

Meanwhile, the brief respite from the recent heatwave is expected to end by midweek, with forecasts predicting a return of intense heat and heavy thermal loads across Israel. Residents are advised to prepare for above-average temperatures and challenging heat conditions in the coming days.
