Israeli Police Reopen Teen Murder Case After Nearly 20 Years with New Investigation Team

Nearly two decades after the murder of teenager Tair Rada at the Nofey Golan school in Katzrin, Israeli police have reopened the investigation following new information. The case was transferred from the Northern District Police to the Tel Aviv District Police, where investigators are reviewing evidence and exploring new leads. This decision came after extensive discussions at the highest levels of the police, including Police Commissioner Danni Levi, who emphasized the need for a fresh investigative perspective rather than relying solely on previous inquiries.

Tair Rada’s murder case is one of Israel’s most complex and controversial. Roman Zadorov was convicted in 2010 but was acquitted in 2023 after a retrial and reevaluation of the evidence. Zadorov served approximately 15 years in prison and later reached a compensation agreement with the state for 17 million shekels. The case has also involved testimonies from key figures such as Ola Kravchenko, who admitted in a December 2024 court hearing to having lied in the past, including during Zadorov’s trial.

The reopening follows criticism from the judiciary about the original investigation’s handling. Judge Asher Kola, who presided over Zadorov’s retrial, noted that the Northern District Police’s early conclusion that Zadorov was the murderer may have hindered efforts to investigate other suspects, including Kravchenko and Adir Havni. The transfer of the case to a different district aims to allow a new team to examine the evidence without prior biases and possibly uncover previously overlooked leads.

Police hope that this renewed investigation, supported by fresh evidence and further inquiries, will bring the case closer to a definitive resolution. The decision to reopen the case was ordered by Boaz Balat, head of the Investigations and Intelligence Division, in coordination with Commissioner Levi. The investigation’s progress will be closely watched given the case’s high profile and the significant public interest surrounding it.
