IDF Career Soldiers’ Salaries Rise in 2026 with Focus on Combat Commanders

In 2026, the salaries of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) career soldiers have increased, accompanied by a strategic shift in benefits allocation. The Israeli Defense Ministry, Finance Ministry, and IDF are gradually directing more resources toward combat commanders, operational units, and professions facing retention challenges. This approach aims to align compensation with workload, responsibility, and civilian labor market demand.

Since January 2026, the dedicated monthly salary supplement was updated, and a temporary salary deduction was reduced from 2.48% in 2025 to 1.2% in 2026. For example, a soldier earning 15,000 shekels monthly now faces a deduction of 180 shekels, down from previous levels. In March, an agreement allocated approximately 700 million shekels for excellence, retention, and long-service bonuses, adding to a broader 3.25 billion shekel package for 2025-2029 that includes family support, housing, education, and welfare benefits.

Monthly salaries vary by rank, seniority, role, education, and command supplements. For instance, a captain (Sarn) in combat roles can earn up to 17,000 shekels, a lieutenant colonel (Sgan Aluf) up to 36,000 shekels, and a major general (Tat Aluf) between 54,000 and 60,000 shekels. The Chief of Staff’s salary exceeds 100,000 shekels monthly. Additional benefits include housing allowances, official vehicles for certain roles, professional development grants, and extended vacation days.

The salary supplements start from the second year of service for non-commissioned officers and officers up to lieutenant colonel rank, with percentages varying by role and unit. For example, a sergeant major (Rav Samal) earns between 15,000 and 20,000 shekels, while a staff sergeant (Rav Samal B) earns 16,500 to 23,500 shekels. Junior officers such as second lieutenants (Segen) earn between 11,500 and 12,500 shekels.
