Survivors of Australia Attack Choose to Settle in Gaza Envelope for Community Support

Asaf and Hadar Tzuri survived a deadly attack in Sydney, Australia, on December 14, which deeply impacted their outlook on trauma and safety. Despite the danger associated with the Gaza envelope region in southern Israel, they decided to move there, seeking a community that understands trauma and offers emotional and social support. Hadar recalled how her instincts immediately recognized the shooting amid what others thought were fireworks, and how she lost contact with one of her daughters during the chaos, enduring long minutes of fear and uncertainty.

Their choice to settle in an area still grappling with the trauma of the October conflict reflects their desire to be "wrapped" in a community that shares a common language of coping with hardship. For Asaf, returning to Israel was about reconnecting with a sense of home, which he defines not just geographically but through community bonds. They acknowledge that danger exists everywhere, but what matters most is the emotional security and solidarity found in their new environment.
