Sydney Terror Attack Survivor Feels Unsafe in Australia, Considers Moving to Israel
More than six months after the deadly terror attack in Sydney during Hanukkah, survivor Alon Zisser shared his experiences and current feelings in an interview with Lital Shemesh. Zisser, who is currently in Israel receiving medical advice for injuries sustained in the attack, described his connection to the Jewish community in Sydney and his concerns about safety in Australia. He expressed feeling more anxious about Jewish life in Sydney than in Israel, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Zisser revealed that his parents have openly discussed relocating to Israel, preferring to move from a country far from war to one closer to conflict because they feel safer there. He criticized the Australian government's recent decisions, including allowing the return of ISIS brides, which he believes have worsened the security situation for Jews and others in Australia. Zisser also mentioned the community's anticipation for the outcomes of a state inquiry into the attack.
Regarding his own future, Zisser said the thought of making aliyah has crossed his mind repeatedly, though personal and business circumstances make it challenging. He is considering spending part of the year in Israel and has even been advised by family to explore property options there. Despite ongoing recovery, Zisser expressed gratitude for being in Israel and hopes to continue healing.
The interview highlights the lingering trauma from the Sydney attack and the broader concerns about antisemitism and government policies affecting Jewish Australians.
