Sydney Terror Attack Survivor Faces Widespread Antisemitic Abuse and AI-Manipulated Images Online
Arsen Ostrovsky, a survivor of the Hanukkah terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, testified before Australia's Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion about the intense antisemitic abuse he faced online following the attack. Within hours of the shooting, manipulated images and deepfakes circulated widely on social media, including one showing Ostrovsky holding an Oscar award while covered in blood, which was actually ketchup in the doctored photos. Ostrovsky described the experience as surreal, noting that while he was hospitalized and preparing for surgery, hateful content and AI-generated manipulations were spreading rapidly.
Ostrovsky recounted that alongside messages of support, he was targeted with accusations of being a "false flag" actor and claims that his injuries were fabricated. Some posts even accused him of being an intelligence asset and a crisis actor. Despite his efforts to ignore the abuse, he said the relentless harassment sought to erase his traumatic experience. The Royal Commission also heard from a Jewish mother in Sydney whose daughter faced antisemitic bullying at school and online, including a TikTok video using coded language to evade content filters. The video was traced to an account created by one of the girl's close friends.
The inquiry has called on major social media platforms such as Google, Meta, TikTok, and LinkedIn to cooperate in addressing online hate speech. However, some platforms, notably Gab Social, have been openly hostile to the commission's requests. Gab's CEO Andrew Torba publicly rejected Australian government censorship efforts, asserting the platform's commitment to unrestricted free speech despite legal pressures.
The Royal Commission was established after the deadly Hanukkah attack that claimed 15 lives and is currently conducting its third series of hearings focused on online hate speech and media responsibility. Ostrovsky's testimony highlights the challenges survivors face not only from physical trauma but also from coordinated online antisemitic harassment and misinformation campaigns.
