Maccabi Tel Aviv Signs Iffe Lundberg to New Two-Year Deal, Eyes Jamir Young as Loni Walker Replacement

Maccabi Tel Aviv has finalized a new contract with Danish point guard Iffe Lundberg, agreeing to a two-year deal with an option for a third season. The agreement, reached overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, will pay Lundberg approximately $1.7 million per season before bonuses. This deal marks a significant step for Maccabi in securing their roster for the upcoming seasons.

Lundberg, 31, joined Maccabi in November from Partizan Belgrade but faced injuries that limited his playtime. He appeared in 16 EuroLeague games this season, averaging 11 points, 3.6 assists, and 2 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game. In the Israeli Premier League, he averaged 10.5 points and 3.8 assists over 12 games, and he was a standout player in the playoffs with 14.1 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Negotiations for Lundberg’s contract had been ongoing for several months, initially complicated by salary disagreements. Maccabi was unwilling to offer more than $1 million per season, while Lundberg’s demands approached $3 million after his strong finals performance against Hapoel Tel Aviv. The breakthrough came recently when Lundberg indicated willingness to continue with the team, especially as no higher offers emerged.

Simultaneously, Maccabi is working to reach an agreement with guard Loni Walker to terminate his contract, allowing him more time to find a new team, possibly in the United States or Asia. Walker has yet to secure a new club, and Maccabi is facilitating his release.

To replace Walker, Maccabi has identified American guard Jamir Young as a candidate. Young, 25, who played college basketball at Charlotte and Maryland, appeared in 20 NBA games with Chicago and Miami over the past two seasons but did not make a significant impact. However, he excelled in the NBA G League, averaging 25.9 points, 8.5 assists, and 4.9 rebounds last season with Miami’s development team. Hapoel Tel Aviv has also shown interest in Young as they finalize their roster.
