WhatsApp to Let Users Customize Quick Reaction Emojis During Chats

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to replace the six default emojis in the quick reaction tray with their preferred symbols. Currently, users must tap a plus button and search the full emoji keyboard to use emojis outside the preset six, which slows down response times during chats. The upcoming update will enable users to personalize their "top six" emojis, tailoring the reaction tray to their individual communication habits and contexts, such as choosing neutral emojis for business chats or more expressive ones for family conversations.

This customization will be accessible through a dedicated settings screen, where users can tap each slot in the reaction tray to select a different emoji from the full collection. Users can update their choices at any time, ending the reliance on Meta's default emoji set. This enhancement aims to significantly improve user experience by creating shortcuts for the most frequently used reactions.

The feature is currently in internal development (version 2.26.29.3) and has not yet been released even to beta testers. WhatsApp is testing the stability and synchronization speed of the new interface across devices linked to the same account. The full rollout is expected within the coming months and will be part of "WhatsApp Plus," a paid subscription service that also includes advanced personalization options like themes, custom icons, and the ability to pin up to 20 chats.

This emoji customization is a key element of Meta's strategy to make WhatsApp Plus more attractive by offering users greater control over their messaging experience.
