WhatsApp Develops New Animated Themes and Redesigned Customization Options

WhatsApp is working on a major update to its chat theme system, introducing new design categories and animated backgrounds. This development was revealed in an experimental Android version but is not yet available to beta testers or the general public. According to WABetaInfo, the app will reorganize the theme selection screen to include several categories, with a main "Featured" section showcasing highlighted designs chosen by WhatsApp alongside other styles for broader personalization.

A key innovation is the introduction of animated wallpapers that slowly move behind messages, adding a dynamic feel to chats. These animations are expected to be subtle to avoid distracting from message readability. WhatsApp will also automatically adjust the color of message bubbles to maintain sufficient contrast and design consistency with any chosen background, including colorful or animated ones. It is currently unclear if users will be able to manually customize individual colors.

This update expands on WhatsApp’s existing theme system, which allows users to select different colors and backgrounds for all chats or customize individual conversations. The new options could make WhatsApp’s personalization features more comparable to those offered by competing messaging apps.
