Israeli Attorney General Criticizes National Security Minister Ben Gvir's Public Police Critique Over Bnei Brak Protest

Israel's Attorney General responded to the Supreme Court on Monday, expressing concern over National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir's public criticism of police conduct during a tense protest at the entrance to Bnei Brak. The protest involved the use of stun grenades against ultra-Orthodox demonstrators, which sparked controversy. The Attorney General warned that Ben Gvir's public remarks could send a problematic message to police officers and potentially cause harm.

Following the incident, Ben Gvir ordered an urgent discussion on the use of stun grenades, emphasizing that such measures should be reserved for exceptional cases and applied according to regulations without selective enforcement. He also requested the Police Commissioner to review the actions of the Ramat Gan police station commander responsible for the event.

The Attorney General's submission to the Supreme Court highlighted that Ben Gvir's public criticism might influence police judgment negatively. Earlier on Monday, she informed the court that she had failed to reach an agreement with Ben Gvir regarding the limits of his authority over the police. Her response included several examples illustrating his conduct, including his intervention after the Bnei Brak protest.
