Government Legal Advisor Says National Security Minister Continues Interfering in Police Work Despite Court Orders

On Monday, Government Legal Advisor Gali Baharav-Miara informed the Israeli Supreme Court that attempts to reach an agreed framework with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have failed. According to Baharav-Miara, Ben-Gvir continues to interfere in police operations contrary to a court injunction. She detailed that after four meetings discussing relevant procedures and internal reviews, significant gaps remain, particularly regarding protecting police independence from ministerial interference. Baharav-Miara emphasized that these gaps reflect Ben-Gvir's rejection of the principle of police apolitical conduct and the prohibition on political interference in law enforcement actions against Israeli citizens. She also noted ongoing violations by the minister, which contravene previously agreed principles and a court-issued interim order. These actions undermine efforts to finalize procedural guidelines intended to prevent such breaches and safeguard police autonomy. In response, Ben-Gvir sharply criticized Baharav-Miara, accusing her of attempting to undermine the right-wing government and vowing to continue his work regardless.
