Israeli Police Arrest Two Sheikhs in Western Galilee with Guns and Bombs, Prevent Serious Crime
Israeli police in the northern district arrested two sheikhs overnight Friday in the Western Galilee, seizing a loaded handgun, a magazine, and an improvised explosive device from their vehicle. The two men, aged 29 and 34, residents of Kisra and Sajur respectively, were stopped during a proactive operation in Samia. Authorities found the vehicle carried duplicate license plates, and the bomb disposal unit safely neutralized the explosive device discovered alongside a detonator and other materials including veils and gloves.
Police suspect the suspects were en route to commit a serious criminal act linked to a religious conflict. Following interrogation, the two were brought before the Haifa Magistrate's Court where their detention was extended. The police described the arrest as part of a series of thwarted incidents in the northern district.
This operation follows a recent incident near Afula in the village of Sulam, where police neutralized a suspect who fired at a residence and officers. The suspect was shot during a police chase and later died at Emek Medical Center. Authorities continue to emphasize their efforts to prevent violent acts in the region.
