IDF Kills Hamas Commander Linked to Hostage Holding in Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet confirmed on Friday that Anas Mahmoud Ahmad Hamdan, a Hamas platoon commander, was killed in an airstrike in Khan Yunis, Gaza. Hamdan was a key figure in holding Israeli hostages in Gaza and managing their return process. He was also responsible for Hamas propaganda in the Khan Yunis brigade.
Hamdan served as a close aide to senior Hamas military leaders Mohammed Deif and Raed Salama for years, including during the recent conflict. Throughout the war, he was directly involved in hostage custody and documented hostages during release ceremonies. Before the war, he was involved in holding Israeli civilian Avera Mengistu.
Recently, Hamdan was engaged in training militants and planning terror attacks against IDF forces and Israeli civilians. The IDF described his elimination as a significant and symbolic closure, noting his role in planning and securing Hamas leaders responsible for the October 7 massacre. The strike was carried out with precise aerial attacks to neutralize the threat he posed to Israeli forces operating in Gaza.
