IDF and Shin Bet Eliminate Senior Hamas Commander Involved in Hostage Holding and Terror Planning
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet announced the killing of Anas Mahmoud Ahmad Hamdan, a Hamas platoon commander, in Khan Yunis on July 16, 2026. Hamdan was a close aide to senior Hamas military leaders Mohammed Deif and Raed Salama for years. He played a key role in Hamas propaganda within the Khan Yunis brigade and was directly involved in holding Israeli hostages, including documenting their "release ceremonies." He was also connected to the captivity of Avraham Mengistu prior to the current conflict.
According to the IDF, Hamdan recently focused on training militants and orchestrating terror attacks against Israeli Defense Forces and civilians. Due to his active role in planning and securing Hamas leadership responsible for the October 7 massacre, the security forces considered him a significant threat. His elimination was described as an important and symbolic closure by the Israeli defense establishment.
The IDF Southern Command forces remain deployed in the area under existing agreements and continue operations to neutralize immediate threats. This targeted airstrike reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict.
