14-Year-Old Files Criminal Complaint Against TikTok Over Sexual Harassment Content
A 14-year-old girl who endured repeated sexual harassment and humiliation on TikTok has filed a criminal complaint against the platform and its Israeli operations manager, Anna Falkin. The complaint alleges that TikTok was aware of the degrading content but only agreed to remove it after legal threats. The girl's lawyer, Guy Ophir, stated that the complainant and her family felt powerless against the platform, which disregarded her privacy and dignity, prioritizing viral traffic over protecting a minor's rights.
Central to the complaint is a TikTok account named "Shame Wall of [the girl's town]," created on May 24, featuring a profile picture of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The account posts humiliating content targeting minors from the town, including a post about the girl with a false, sexually explicit caption labeling her a "slut" and using the hashtag "#slut." This post quickly went viral, garnering thousands of views, hundreds of shares, and numerous harmful comments, causing the girl to become the subject of community gossip, leading her to avoid leaving her home or attending school.
Despite multiple reports from the girl, her family, and acquaintances, TikTok initially refused to remove the content, claiming it did not violate community guidelines. The post was only taken down about 48 hours later after the girl's lawyer sent a legal warning. The complaint seeks 150,000 shekels in damages, citing the severity of the acts, the girl's young age, the sexual nature of the posts, their duration, scope, and the psychological and social harm caused.
Ophir criticized TikTok for its failure to act promptly and noted that while criminal charges are typically filed by the state, the criminal complaint procedure allows victims to act on behalf of the state in cases involving privacy and defamation. He emphasized that the complaint aims to hold TikTok accountable through the criminal justice system, highlighting ongoing harm to vulnerable minors on the platform. TikTok has not responded to the complaint as of now.
