US Military Tanker Planes Grounded at Ben Gurion Airport Threatens Tens of Thousands of Flights
Following a recent escalation in tensions with Iran, the United States military has halted the removal of its refueling aircraft from Ben Gurion Airport in Israel. This decision risks significant operational disruptions at the airport, potentially affecting tens of thousands of passengers, including thousands of Breslov Hasidim planning to fly to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.
Sharon Kadmi, CEO of the Israel Airports Authority, sent an urgent letter to Moshe Ben-Zaken, CEO of the Ministry of Transport, warning that the continued presence of US tanker planes, now numbering four additional aircraft, at the airport's parking stands could force the cancellation of approximately 50,000 flight tickets by the end of July. Kadmi emphasized that if the agreed evacuation plan is not immediately resumed, starting July 23, a severe shortage of parking stands for passenger planes will occur, potentially leading to the cancellation of about 10 flights daily.
The Ministry of Transport has communicated that the Transport Minister does not approve landing of additional US tanker aircraft at Ben Gurion, aiming to protect civilian passengers. Kadmi stressed that the ongoing situation threatens the airport’s status as a reliable aviation hub and could have broad economic and operational consequences.
Earlier, in late May, Transport Minister Miri Regev warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the operational lockdown at Ben Gurion caused by the tanker planes occupying parking spaces. She described the civil aviation sector as effectively under a "functional lockdown," with drastically reduced parking allocations for Israeli airlines and diminished airport capacity.
The Ministry of Transport suggests relocating the US tanker planes to Israeli Air Force bases, which have sufficient distributed capacity, coordinated with the Americans. Regev called this the "only realistic solution" to avoid long-term economic and strategic damage.
"We urgently request the immediate implementation of the agreed evacuation plan to prevent severe operational and public consequences," Kadmi wrote, cautioning that without freeing parking stands for civilian aviation, significant operational measures, including flight cancellations, will be unavoidable.
