Israel Bans US Refueling Planes From Landing at Ben Gurion Airport Amid Security Tensions

Israel's Airports Authority recently issued an unusual directive instructing Israeli air traffic control to deny landing permissions to American refueling aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport. This order came directly from the Ministry of Transport and the office of Minister Miri Regev. The move follows the United States' decision to freeze the removal of its refueling planes from the airport amid escalating security tensions with Iran.

Industry sources suggest this reflects a power struggle between Israeli aviation authorities and the US government. The presence of these US military refueling planes occupies critical parking spots at Ben Gurion, disrupting operations and threatening the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers, including thousands of Breslov Hasidim traveling to Uman for the Jewish New Year.

Sharon Kadmi, CEO of the Airports Authority, sent an urgent letter to Moshe Ben-Zaken, CEO of the Ministry of Transport, warning that without an immediate resumption of the aircraft removal plan, a severe shortage of parking positions will force the cancellation of about 10 flights daily starting July 23. This could lead to approximately 50,000 canceled tickets by the end of the month. Earlier, in late May, Minister Regev had already alerted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the operational challenges posed by the US military planes at the civilian airport.

The crisis underscores the operational and political complications arising from the US military's continued presence at Israel's main international airport amid regional security concerns.
