IDF Surprised by Transport Minister Rakevet's Ban on US Refueling Planes at Ben Gurion Airport
The Israeli Defense Forces were caught off guard by Transport Minister Miri Regev's unusual directive to prohibit American refueling aircraft from landing at Ben Gurion Airport. This decision was reported on Tuesday evening by Kan News and came despite unprecedented cooperation between Israel and the United States during the ongoing campaign against Iran and the current escalation between the two countries.
Reports indicate concerns that many Israelis planning summer vacations abroad may be unable to travel due to the presence of US refueling planes at the airport. A senior Air Force official told Kan News, "With all due respect to Israeli vacationers, the country's security is far more important."
At the peak of the campaign against Iran, approximately 90 US refueling planes were stationed in Israel. Currently, 34 remain parked at Ben Gurion and Ramon airports. Previously, there was consideration to relocate some of these aircraft to Israeli Air Force bases such as Nevatim, Ramon, and Ovda. However, both Israeli and American officials agreed that no suitable alternative exists to the two civilian airports.
In related news, senior Hamas officials recently met with Iranian leadership, and a security source warned that Turkey is deepening its involvement in the Syrian arena.
