US Military Considers Returning Refueling Aircraft to Ben Gurion Airport Amid Middle East Tensions

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East and recent US military strikes in Iranian territory, Israeli authorities have evaluated the possibility of returning American refueling aircraft to Israel, including Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli Air Force bases are currently struggling to accommodate these tankers due to operational challenges, prompting consideration of their redeployment to Ben Gurion.

Currently, 20 US refueling aircraft are stationed at Ben Gurion following months of efforts by Israel's Ministry of Transport to clear dozens of tankers that had occupied space needed for civilian flights, especially during the summer travel season. The Ministry agreed to allow the US military to use Ben Gurion as needed to prioritize security requirements.

If only a small number of tankers return, the airport expects to manage with minimal disruption, though some delays may occur since US tankers receive priority in ground and air services. However, if the US military demands a return to previous levels of over 70 tankers, as was the case until early June, significant disruptions to civilian flights and widespread ticket cancellations could result.
