Darline Graham Nordan Appointed to Fill Late Senator Lindsey Graham's Senate Seat
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced that Darline Graham Nordan, sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, will serve as his temporary replacement in the U.S. Senate until the current term ends in January. The announcement was made during a special press conference at the state House of Representatives. Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed that Nordan's official swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday, making her the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
Nordan expressed honor at her appointment, stating, "Lindsey was always there for me. Now I will be there for him." Lindsey Graham passed away suddenly on Saturday night and had never married or had children. Over the years, Nordan was a constant presence alongside her brother during key moments in his public life, often speaking at political events and participating in his campaign ads. Their close bond was strengthened after their parents died when they were young, with Lindsey becoming her legal guardian.
Governor McMaster revealed he contacted Nordan early Sunday morning after the tragedy and was impressed by her swift acceptance of the responsibility. He also shared that President Donald Trump supported the appointment and issued a public statement backing Nordan. Residing in Lexington, Nordan holds a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from Charleston College and has worked as an optician and in various South Carolina government agencies, including the Department of Employment and Workforce and the State Commission for the Blind.
Alongside her temporary appointment, South Carolina is preparing for a special election next month to select the Republican candidate who will run in the general election for Lindsey Graham's Senate seat.
