Barcelona Zoo Study Reveals Giraffes Can Perform Basic Mathematical Calculations

A groundbreaking study conducted at the Barcelona Zoo has revealed that giraffes possess surprising cognitive abilities, including the capacity to perform mental addition. Researchers from the University of Barcelona tested four giraffes by presenting them with containers holding visible quantities of their favorite treat, carrots. Additional carrots were then secretly added to one container while the giraffes watched. To succeed, the giraffes had to mentally combine the quantities and select the container with the greatest number of carrots.

The results were striking: two of the four giraffes consistently chose the container with the larger total. Lead researcher Iker Loidi clarified that this was not symbolic arithmetic like humans perform, but rather a perceptual basis for addition, involving working memory and mental manipulation of quantities. However, the giraffes were unable to perform more complex tasks involving subtraction, indicating limits to their numerical cognition.

Loidi suggested that these skills likely evolved to help giraffes navigate their complex savanna environment, such as identifying areas dense with acacia trees, avoiding predators, and managing social interactions. This study adds to growing evidence that quantitative thinking is not unique to humans, with giraffes outperforming dogs, horses, and some fish in similar tests.

The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, contribute to a broader scientific understanding of how intelligence has evolved across species. Loidi concluded, "Giraffes are creatures with high cognitive ability. We are not the only intelligent animals on Earth."
