Chimpanzees at Ramat Gan Safari Exhibit Remarkable Problem-Solving Skills
The Ramat Gan Safari recently conducted a special enrichment activity for its chimpanzees, involving a challenging puzzle with fruits that quickly went viral online. Keepers placed fruits inside a mesh structure, making direct access impossible and prompting the chimpanzees to devise creative solutions.
The objective of the activity was to encourage the chimpanzees to think, experiment, and find innovative ways to obtain the food. Chimpanzees are known for their high intelligence, advanced learning abilities, and capacity for imitation, ranking among the smartest species in the animal kingdom.
During the exercise, the chimpanzees were observed carefully examining the mesh structure and utilizing various tools to reach the fruits. Their behavior demonstrated impressive planning and problem-solving capabilities, mirroring the complex social interactions they regularly exhibit. These enrichment activities are a vital part of the chimpanzees' care routine at the safari, allowing them to express natural behaviors, engage their bodies and minds, and maintain high levels of mental stimulation, similar to their foraging activities in the wild.
The safari's chimpanzees are also recognized for their sophisticated communication skills, employing vocalizations, gestures, and body language to interact. Observers noted that when novel situations arise in their enclosure, communication among group members becomes notably active.
