Israeli Researchers Study Cow Optimism Using Novel 'Game'
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are developing innovative methods to understand animal emotions, specifically focusing on whether cows can exhibit optimism. Dr. Oren Forkosh, leading the study at a dairy farm in Mikve Israel, employs a non-invasive approach using a 'game' where cows are trained to respond to vibrations from a device on their necks. These vibrations signal whether going to a 'surprise box' will yield a tasty reward, with a 90% chance of a reward for a continuous vibration and only a 20% chance for a segmented one. The cows' decisions to approach the box, especially when the signal is ambiguous, provide insights into their potential optimism.
Dr. Forkosh emphasizes that this research aims to bypass the limitations of directly asking animals about their feelings, a method impossible for humans and fraught with potential for misinterpretation even in human subjects. He draws parallels to human studies on happiness, noting that even people can misrepresent their feelings or lack a clear definition of happiness. The study avoids anthropomorphism by focusing on observable behavior and choices, rather than projecting human emotions onto the animals. Previous research with mice, for example, showed how flawed assumptions about their behavior, based on human-centric interpretations, could lead to incorrect conclusions.
The research involves equipping cows with sensors to build detailed behavioral profiles, analyzing individual traits like social interaction preferences and movement patterns. The goal is not to rank cows against each other but to track changes within an individual animal over time, indicating shifts in their well-being. Early findings suggest that environmental enrichment, such as smaller herd sizes and more toys, can reduce stress hormones like cortisol, though these positive effects may not be permanent, highlighting that happiness is not a static state.
Forkosh's broader ambition is to create a 'universal translator' for animals, not based on vocalizations but on complex behavioral data. This would allow for a deeper understanding of animal personalities, social structures, and emotional states, potentially leading to more ethical treatment and improved human-animal coexistence. The research acknowledges that animals, like humans, have individual personalities that influence their well-being, and understanding these nuances is crucial for creating environments where they can thrive.
