Israeli Project Uses Advanced Genetics to Preserve Halachically Kosher Red Cows

In Shiloh, a pioneering project is underway to ensure a new generation of red cows that meet strict Jewish halachic standards. The initiative, based at the "Red Cow" visitor center in ancient Shiloh, began a controlled insemination process on two cows to secure the future of this religiously significant herd. Originally, the herd was founded with four red cows imported from the United States, but over time two were disqualified due to black and white hairs appearing on their bodies, while the remaining two fully red cows have reached the age of four.

Although Jewish law does not set an official age limit for these cows, the research center opted to proactively prepare for the future. The current procedure employs advanced genetic research to maximize the chances of producing calves with completely red coats. Interestingly, the insemination is being performed on the two previously disqualified cows, as scientific studies suggest that breeding them with selected semen still holds high potential for yielding halachically valid offspring.

The center emphasizes that the cows are raised under strict supervision combining scientific and halachic oversight to prevent any defects that would disqualify them. This approach contrasts with a recent case in the Golan Heights where a red cow’s ear was pierced for registration purposes, raising complex halachic questions. Representatives explained that the deep motivation behind this scientific and religious effort is to prepare for the day when the red cow will be used in the Temple Mount ritual, aiming for purity and readiness as the community commemorates the destruction of the Temple.
