Suzuki Launches e-Vitara Electric SUV as Non-Chinese Alternative Under 200,000 Shekels
Suzuki has introduced the e-Vitara, its first electric SUV, priced from 155,000 shekels, positioning it as a competitive non-Chinese option in Israel's growing electric vehicle market. The e-Vitara is manufactured in India by Suzuki's subsidiary Maruti and is unrelated mechanically to the traditional Vitara model. It features a 61 kWh battery, delivering a manufacturer-stated range of 426 kilometers, though real-world tests showed about 340 kilometers. Charging is slower than some Chinese competitors, with a 70 kW fast charger requiring 45 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. The vehicle offers front-wheel drive with 174 horsepower and an optional all-wheel-drive version with 181 horsepower.
The e-Vitara's design is sober and somewhat rugged, with dimensions similar to competitors BYD Atto 2 and JAC 5. Inside, it emphasizes simplicity and user-friendly ergonomics, featuring a 10.25-inch central screen and physical controls for climate and audio, enhancing ease of use and safety. The rear seating area is spacious but lacks rear air vents and has small windows, which may affect passenger comfort. Cargo space ranges from 240 to 310 liters, smaller than many electric crossovers in its class, and there is no spare tire.
Safety-wise, the e-Vitara earned four out of five stars in European crash tests and includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and driver alert systems. However, it lacks some advanced safety features like blind-spot door opening warnings. The suspension is tuned for firmness, providing stable cornering but a somewhat stiff ride in urban settings.
This launch comes amid Israel's security establishment's recent ban on Chinese vehicles due to national security concerns, especially given China's arms sales to Iran and intelligence cooperation. The e-Vitara, along with other recent Japanese and Korean electric models, offers a trusted alternative for Israeli consumers wary of Chinese brands. Suzuki's reputation for reliability and straightforward engineering is seen as a key advantage, despite the e-Vitara's modest range and slower charging.
Suzuki offers the e-Vitara in three trims: the base GLX from 155,000 shekels, the better-equipped GLXV from 163,000 shekels, and an all-wheel-drive GLXV variant at 180,000 shekels. Warranty covers three years or 100,000 kilometers for the vehicle, five years for electric components, and eight years or 160,000 kilometers for the battery.
