Chief Rabbinate Grants Official Kosher Certification to Tzohar Organization for First Time

In a landmark decision, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel has officially authorized the Tzohar rabbinical organization to issue kosher certification to businesses across the country. This marks the first time since Tzohar established its kosher certification system about a decade ago that it has received formal recognition from the Chief Rabbinate. The approval follows a prolonged and intense legal battle in the Supreme Court, where Tzohar demonstrated that its certification system already supervises hundreds of restaurants, factories, and other establishments nationwide, maintaining high halachic and professional standards.

Until now, Tzohar operated as a private alternative under significant legal restrictions due to the Chief Rabbinate's historical monopoly on kosher certification. The new official recognition breaks this monopoly, potentially opening the market to free competition. This change is expected to reduce supervision costs for business owners, enhance service quality, and improve public access to kosher certification services throughout Israel.
