Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija is impressing in the NBA, with analysts highlighting his significant impact on the Portland Trail Blazers' strong start to the season. The team boasts a 6-1 record, and Avdija's performance in a recent 132-119 victory over Phoenix, where he recorded 21 points, seven rebounds, and 12 assists, has drawn widespread attention.
Commentators Nate Duncan and John Hollinger discussed Avdija's crucial role on the team, even with the addition of other stars. Hollinger noted his relief that Avdija remains the "central player" for the Blazers, a concern he had previously. Duncan agreed, stating Avdija still has the highest usage rate on the team, even before another player's injury, calling it an "encouraging sign."
Podcaster Matias Dabbs analyzed Avdija's game against Phoenix, emphasizing how opposing defenses react to him even before he initiates significant offensive plays. Dabbs observed that double-teams are formed as soon as Avdija receives the ball, even early in the game, forcing defenses into disarray and creating advantages for his teammates. He described this as Avdija "controlling the game from the first moment."
Dabbs further praised Avdija's passing ability, calling it an "elite" skill that is not fully appreciated. He believes Avdija is rapidly becoming a "superstar-level player" partly due to his capacity to find open teammates, a trait not common among stars. Dabbs also noted Avdija's improved confidence in his outside shooting, particularly in catch-and-shoot situations.
Despite the praise, Dabbs suggested areas for Avdija's improvement, including shooting more and being more assertive in creating separation for three-pointers. However, he concluded that Avdija's current overall game is "close to perfect."
