Despite having stars Ja Morant and Damian Lillard, Israeli player Deni Avdija has emerged as the most important player for the Portland Trail Blazers as the season progresses, according to analyst and former player Tim Legler. Legler explained on the "All City NBA" podcast that the Blazers heavily rely on Avdija, particularly in clutch situations.
"This is how they go to finish games, they go with Avdija because he is the tougher matchup. It's almost impossible to stop him from getting to the paint, he comes at you with so much power that the defense has to help," Legler stated. He elaborated that with Lillard on the right side and Morant on the left, the team often isolates Avdija in the middle for game-ending plays.
Legler highlighted Avdija's physical attributes, strength, and ability to drive to the basket and force defensive reactions as key factors in his effectiveness. "He does it with his size, his strength and his ability to get into any situation, get past players one-on-one, cross them over, get to the paint and force a reaction. This is how they are going to decide games," he concluded.
Legler expressed optimism about the team's start to the season, calling it excellent and stating, "It's early, but this is an excellent start for this team. I love this group."
