Shas Chairman Arie Deri visited the home of Rabbi Moshe Maya, the senior member of the Council of Torah Sages, on Wednesday evening. This marks the first time Deri has been seen with Rabbi Maya and Rabbi Shmuel Betzalel, another council member, since the recent elections. The meeting occurs amid significant turmoil within the Shas party and reports that Deri intends to retire from political life.
Earlier on Wednesday, it was revealed that Deri had informed rabbis of his decision to leave politics the previous evening. In response, the spiritual leader of Shas, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, summoned an emergency meeting of the Council of Torah Sages. During this meeting, the rabbis are expected to discuss Deri's future and attempt to persuade him against a complete withdrawal from politics.
Deri's visit follows his absence from recent consultations held by Shas Knesset members with rabbis regarding recommendations for the President of Israel. His current meeting with the senior council member comes as questions linger about his continued tenure in leadership.
