Lillard Urges Avdija to Lead Portland to Victory Over Denver

Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard encouraged Israeli player Deni Avdija to take a leading role after Avdija's standout performance in their 118-110 road win against the Denver Nuggets. Avdija scored 28 points, including nine crucial points in the final quarter, to secure the victory.

Lillard told Avdija, "You are the one who needs to lead. Be ready, penetrate, attack. I think it's good for our team, it's good for all of us." Lillard praised Avdija's powerful offensive play, noting his ability to drive to the basket, forcing opposing defenses to collapse. "Players have to come to help. When you get into the paint and the defense collapses, you can kick the ball out and find your teammates," Lillard explained, highlighting a key play where Avdija's penetration opened up opportunities for others.

Lillard, who contributed 20 points himself, observed that Avdija consistently attacked the paint, even when not scoring directly from there. "He's playing with so much power on offense and managing to get to the paint. You almost have to foul him because he's so big, fast, and strong," Lillard said. He added that Avdija understands the importance of continuing to apply pressure.

Portland coach the Portland coach also commended Avdija's effectiveness, particularly his drives to the basket. The Portland coach noted that Avdija excelled at attacking before the defense could fully set up, especially when the ball was switched to the weak side. "Deni did a great job penetrating the paint. When his defender comes to help, you pass it to him. Deni is as good as anyone in the league when he gets the ball on the move and attacks the basket," the Portland coach stated.
