Summer Fruit Prices Vary Widely Across Israeli Retailers, Consumers Urged to Shop Smart

Summer fruit prices in Israel have reached new highs, forcing many consumers to forgo these seasonal treats. Dr. Hazi Gur Mizrahi, CEO of the Retail Research Institute, appeared on the "HaOlam HaBoker" program to analyze where it is most cost-effective to buy summer fruits. He revealed dramatic price disparities, with grape prices ranging from 10 to 60 shekels per kilogram. Although current peak prices are lower than those at the start of last season, the wide price gaps remain and directly impact consumers' budgets.

Price differences are most pronounced when comparing various supermarket chains. For example, grapes show a staggering 171% price gap, selling for 9.90 shekels per kilogram in one chain and 26.90 shekels in another. Similar disparities exist for apricots (161%), watermelons (93%), and apples (90%). Additionally, prices in specialty stores can be up to 130% higher than in supermarkets. Agricultural factors also play a role, with mango yields down about 70% this year.

Mizrahi explained that these price gaps stem from different business strategies. Large supermarket chains often use fruits and vegetables as loss leaders, offering low prices early in the week to attract customers who then buy other profitable items. Prices typically rise toward the end of the week. In contrast, specialty stores rely mainly on fruit sales and thus maintain consistently higher prices, with watermelons sometimes costing 50 to 60 shekels.

Given these disparities, consumers can save significant amounts by shopping strategically and timing their purchases early in the week. Mizrahi emphasized the importance of careful price comparisons, noting that a fruit basket can cost 73 shekels more in one supermarket than another, and prices at private greengrocers can be substantially higher.
