Israel Successfully Tests Upgraded Iron Dome System with Laser Integration

Israel's Ministry of Defense, through the "Homa" Directorate at the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure (Mafat), together with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, has completed a comprehensive series of successful tests on the upgraded Iron Dome air defense system. These trials, conducted recently, incorporated operational lessons learned from recent conflicts and confrontations with Iran, aiming to enhance the system's response to a wide range of advanced threats.

The upgrades tested include improved capabilities against rockets, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as technological enhancements to better handle high volumes and rates of incoming fire. Additionally, the tests integrated the powerful "Or Aytan" laser system, developed by Mafat's R&D unit as a complementary layer to Iron Dome, with joint operational scenarios executed from Iron Dome's command and control complex.

These new capabilities mark a significant advancement in Israel's multi-layered air defense strategy, reinforcing the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) qualitative and strategic edge for the coming decade. Iron Dome, operational since 2011 and primarily developed by Rafael alongside Israel Aerospace Industries and subsidiaries like Elta and mPrest, has been a critical asset in intercepting thousands of rockets during conflicts such as Operation Guardian of the Walls, preventing casualties and protecting vital infrastructure.

Moshe Fatal, head of the "Homa" Directorate, emphasized the system's central role in Israel's defense and highlighted the accelerated production efforts in Israel and the U.S. to meet all potential scenarios. Yoav Turgeman, CEO of Rafael, expressed pride in the advanced testing outcomes, noting the system's proven effectiveness during intense combat and its readiness to counter future threats. The Ministry of Defense continues to upgrade Iron Dome and Or Aytan across air, land, and sea domains, even under combat conditions, to maintain civilian life continuity during hostilities.
