Israel Upgrades Iron Dome With Faster Firing Rate and Enhanced Accuracy
Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system has undergone a significant upgrade, improving both its firing speed and interception accuracy. The upgrade was developed by the Ministry of Defense's "Homa" management at the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure (Mafat) in collaboration with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The enhancements were tested successfully in a series of trials simulating advanced threats such as rockets, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
These improvements incorporate operational lessons learned from recent conflicts and operations against Iran, aiming to better address current and future attack scenarios. The upgraded system also integrates technological advancements to handle higher volumes and rates of incoming fire. Additionally, the trials included joint operational scenarios with the "Or Oitan" high-power laser system, developed as a complementary defense layer to Iron Dome, with control and command systems tested together.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that these new capabilities represent a major step forward in Israel's defense readiness, contributing to the strategic goal of maintaining the Israel Defense Forces' qualitative and strategic edge in both defense and offense for the coming decade. Rafael, the primary developer of Iron Dome, worked alongside Israel Aerospace Industries, Elta Systems, mPrest, Elbit Systems, and other defense industries in these advancements. The "Or Oitan" laser system was developed jointly by Rafael and Elbit Systems, with additional contributions from SCD and Shapir Systems.
This upgrade follows 15 years of Iron Dome's operational success and precedes the planned introduction of a new Iron Dome version with further interception improvements.
