Rafael Plans New Iron Dome Production Line in India to Expand Output and Cut Costs

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is reportedly moving forward with plans to establish a new production line for Iron Dome interceptors in India. This strategic step aims to increase manufacturing capacity, reduce costs, and strengthen Rafael's position in the global defense market. The initiative aligns with India's policy requiring foreign defense companies to produce locally when selling to the Indian military, a measure designed to boost the domestic defense industry and economy.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Israel, highlighting the growing defense ties between the two countries. Rafael's move follows similar expansions by Elbit Systems, which manufactures Hermes 900 and Hermes 450 drones in India and supplies components for additional drone squadrons in the Israeli Air Force.

The decision to produce Iron Dome interceptors in India also addresses political challenges in some markets that resist direct defense purchases from Israel. Manufacturing locally in India could facilitate broader sales opportunities. Additionally, foreign sources report that Iron Dome batteries have been deployed in the United Arab Emirates, successfully intercepting rockets, missiles, and drones launched from Iran. These deployments were confirmed by Israeli Transport Minister Merav Michaeli at the "Israel Today" conference.

Overall, Rafael's move to establish production in India reflects a significant shift in its manufacturing strategy, potentially signaling a gradual decoupling from exclusive reliance on U.S. support and production facilities.
