Iron Dome's Architect Discusses Iran, Laser Tech, and Future Defense
Dr. Danny Gold, the driving force behind Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system, has spoken about the nation's evolving defense capabilities and future challenges. In a recent interview, Gold, who heads the Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Research and Development (MAFAT), highlighted Israel's significant advancements in defense, noting that while the Iron Dome has intercepted numerous projectiles, the avoided damage is seven times greater than the cost of the interceptions. He pointed to the costly aftermath of a single strike in Bat Yam as an example of the potential economic devastation averted.
Gold emphasized that the Iron Dome, initially designed for Hamas rockets, has been adapted over the years to counter a wider range of threats, including drones and cruise missiles. He described the system as having an "open architecture" and being a "learning system," constantly being updated in both software and hardware for future generations. He also revealed a recent instance during active combat where a new capability was successfully tested on short notice.
Addressing the threat from Iran, Gold acknowledged that while Israel has achieved air superiority, it's an ongoing learning race. Iran is actively studying Israeli methods and attempting to circumvent them. He noted that while Iran's attacks haven't been highly successful, they are refining their targeting. Gold reported high interception rates, with 92% success against ballistic missiles and nearly 100% against drones during the "Lion's Roar" operation.
The development of the laser interception system, a key component of future air defense, has faced delays. Gold stated that while Israel was the first to deliver a 100-kilowatt laser defense system to the military, its operational status is not solely dependent on MAFAT. He indicated that while smaller laser systems have been deployed and used effectively against dozens of drones, the full operational deployment of the more powerful system is pending external factors. He expressed confidence that Israel will be the first globally to have an operational laser system.
Looking ahead, Gold discussed Israel's strategic focus on space-based capabilities, including advanced radar and imaging satellites, and participation in the "new space" sector with satellite constellations. He also touched upon the emerging threat of hypersonic missiles, describing them as a "real and tangible" challenge due to their speed and unpredictable flight paths. Gold stressed the need for continuous innovation and investment in research and development to maintain Israel's technological edge against a backdrop of increasing global defense budgets and evolving threats, including mass drone swarms and maritime attacks.
