The story · English

A unique and moving Pidyon Haben (redemption of the firstborn son) ceremony took place this morning at the Meknovka Belz Hasidic synagogue in Bnei Brak. The event marked the redemption of a 57-year-old man named David, who had never undergone this biblical commandment since birth. David has been a long-standing member of the Meknovka Belz community, known for welcoming and supporting individuals from all walks of life with warmth and personal care.

The discovery that David had not been redeemed prompted the Meknovka Belz Rebbe to intervene decisively. Deeply saddened that such a fundamental mitzvah had been neglected for nearly six decades, the Rebbe instructed the community's leading rabbis and judges to resolve the complex halachic questions involved in redeeming an adult in this sensitive situation. These included who should recite the blessings and how to conduct the ceremony according to strict Jewish law and custom.

After thorough deliberation, the Rebbe invited the Admor of Spinka Kahana, who also serves as a Rosh Yeshiva in Meknovka Belz, to act as the kohen performing the redemption. The ceremony was held immediately after morning prayers in the presence of the Rebbe and a large crowd of Hasidim, residents, and students. Following the uplifting event, the Rebbes, the redeemed man, and the attendees celebrated together at a festive gathering (tish).
